WIP contest entry: sampo

So, because I won the last modelling competition at #blender.fi I got to choose the next subject. My choice was "sampo".

Sampo is a mythical item that every Finnish person knows from Kalevala. In Kalevala sampo is a mill. The Finnish Wikipedia article gave me an idea of a little bit different version of sampo. I'll use the theory that sampo is a world tree. It's told to have "a multi-colored lid", which apparently might refer to the sky (which, in many cultures, has been seen as a sort of a lid). The roots are on the ground. Still this tree should be grinding wealth.

Here's my amazing concept art. (Click the image to see a bigger version.) As you can see drawing is not my greatest talent. Plus it has some stupid mistakes. But it helps me remember what I was thinking, so it serves it's purpose.

It seems that I'm doing spirals again. For this one I learned to use curves to manipulate other objects. Tuomo was, once again, of great help. He taught me bunch of new stuff and reminded me of stuff that I had forgotten. Now, after a few hours and couple of complete restarts later I have this.

As you can see there's still quite a few problems with the mesh. Some of the problems in the branches won't show anyway, but especially the place where the trunk changes into the branches needs some more work. I do think it looks like a big, old tree, though. So that's a good start!

I have time until next week's Sunday. I'll try to update my progress here a couple of times before that.
