Everyone around me seemed to get the flu and it looked like I'd survive without it. Then today I've been quite tired and had a little bit sore throat and finally some fever too. Blah.
So I didn't really feel like trying to concentrate on studying the book, so instead I experimented with what I've learned. I decided to make a house - a dog house actually. It wasn't quite as easy as I initially thought.
I had to start over several times and I ended up cleaning the geometry by hand. I also cheated a bit with the roof, walls go inside it a bit. It looks fine and today that's enough for me ;)
Once I was happy with the model itself I started having fun with textures and materials. I still have four more chapters to go before the Essential Blender explains me something about texturing, so my attempts were definetly just experimental. There's texture on the ground, on the roof and also on the background. Plus there's mist. The result is nothing very fancy but doing it was a lot of fun :) And here's the rendered picture.

By the way, statistics show that quite a few people read this blog. Also it seems that you come from several different parts of the world. I'd love to get comments from you and hear where you found this blog and where in the world you're reading it. It's been a really nice surprise to see that someone is actually interested in what I'm writing!

Re: Learning Blender - Day 8
Hi Wenya,
I found your Blender diary on Planet Blender some days ago. Being a female Blender user myself, I truly enjoy reading about your adventures and your learning experience very much. Your enthusiasm can really be felt by your writing.
You are doing fine and are progressing nicely. I wish I was as persistent as you when I started learning Blender.
Come visit us sometime in channel #blender on irc.freenode.net if you like, would be nice to chat with a fellow Blenderress. :)
